Hi,
well PEAR still has a serious problem imho with the issues we thought we
could solve with dirname(__FILE__):
1) How to handle includes within PEAR packages.
Basically we need a solution which makes it trivial to keep PEAR
packages outside of search paths for two reasons:
- Some people might not have access to this path because they have a
controlled enviornement
- Some people might not find it feasible to keep them pear packages in a
global search path because they dont want the packages to be updated
globally and also need applications which contain pear packages to be in
one subdir
2) We also need to tackle the following issue: being able to run package
tests within CVS against the code in CVS. Solving the above issue
probably solves most of the problem.
As an aside:
I guess handling tests on pear packages that include other pear packages
might need some manual adjustments in some cases.
Let me explain: usually a developer will probably want to test their
package against the latest stable release of that included package and
the tests will be run in some dev environment where the developer can
make of include paths to ensure that the packages can be included. In
the rare circumstance that a developer wants to test his package against
another package which is also still in CVS he will need to make the
adjustments to his includes manually.
I hope that maybe some brainstorming at the PHP conference will bring a
solution, but to make sure everybody should maybe do some thinking in
advance :-)

Lukas Smith
