bcompiler installation problems

I have just upgraded to php-4.3.0pre2 and I am trying to get bcompiler installed (Red Hat Linux). I have tried pear install bcompiler, which seems to work. The problem I am having is I cannot seem to find (or load) bcompiler.so, the command seems to compile something, but the library is not where it should be. I have also tried extracting to ext/bcompiler, running phpize then ./buildconf, ./configure --with-bcompiler, this also seems to work but no .so file is generated. Last but not least i tried cd to bcompiler - then running phpize, ./configure;make install - this generates a stream of errors and fails to compile. I have also tried using the latest cvs checkout.
