I18N Translations

The I18N package are very nice, support negotiation of language, i see that are a I10N package for datetime, currency, and string compare.
I see that the translation class, now uses only DB interface taht can overhead a bit the data base if the pages contain a lot of text or a lot of clients fecth the pages at the same time.
I want to make a warper for gettext message translation in a I18N Translate class, where i can start?
Any help will be apreciated.
