Well I recommend a wrapper written in PHP for API BC compatibility along
with a sed script to change existing code to the new API. But that
depends on your level of dedication towards the PEAR/PECL community,
which does expect you to tailor your extension/package to its needs. If
this is not feasible for you, you will have to maintain two packages or
wait til someone else puts in the time.
