I just repeated this only I copied the .in file from the unix version of
pear shipped with PHP4.3. That pear.in has a few unix-shell lines before the
'<?' which you have to remove, but then it worked a treat! Thanks.
If you don't have an old pear.in (or you want to run the latest one), grab
the unix one and cut the lines before <?, create
a scripts directory and copy it there as "pear".
I then went on to see what would happen with cygwin and created a shell
script derived from the DOS pear.bat file to run the pear.in I'd set up
under windows. Not only did it work fine but dos and cygwin happily use and
share the same repository cleanly.
My pear.bat is:
@ECHO OFF
REM <retain the REM lines from the pear.bat distributed - cut here for
brevity>
set PHP_BIN=c:\progra~1\php-4.3.0-Win32\cli\php.exe
set BIN_DIR=c:\progra~1\php-4.3.0-Win32\pear\scripts
set PEAR_PATH=c:\progra~1\php-4.3.0-Win32\pear
%PHP_BIN% -C -d output_buffer=1 -d include_path=%PEAR_PATH% -f
%BIN_DIR%\pear -- %1 %2 %3 %4 %5 %6 %7 %8 %9
@ECHO ON
============================================================================
====
My cygwin startup script is:
#!/bin/sh
#
# <the REM lines here >
#
PHP_BIN='/cygdrive/c/progra~1/php-4.3.0-Win32/cli/php.exe'
BIN_DIR='c:\progra~1\php-4.3.0-Win32\pear\scripts'
PEAR_PATH='c:\progra~1\php-4.3.0-Win32\pear'
$PHP_BIN -C -d output_buffer=1 -d include_path=$PEAR_PATH -f
$BIN_DIR'\pear' -- $1 $2 $3 $4 $5 $6 $7 $8 $9
NB the "/" for PHP_BIN and "\" for the others - I'm using the windows
php.exe so it expects dos-style pathnames to be passed to it.

By the way, I did get the installer script working on Windows. If you're
interested see my mail in php.pear.dev on December 30, 2002 (Subject: Re:
PEAR installer missing on Windows + PHP 4.3.0 (pear.bat refers to missing
file?)).
