You might want to take a look at the new stream stuff as well, especially the
new undocumented stream_select() so you can have several backends if the
socket extension is not installed. Some stuff will break without the socket
extension though but it would be nice to have something to fall back on.
Cooincidentally I discussed this and related issues with the new Net_IRC
author on IRC earlier today. And we talked specifically about how it would be
nice to have a good socket class which dealt with abstracting this sort of
thing. A good test of the usability might be to try to port Net_IRC, Yapircl
or something similar to it.
