I believe that standards are standards. If we're doing something that is
making our code inefficient, we should change. If we're just changing or
relaxing 'cause someone does/doesn't like the brackets, welllllll I don't
see that as a positive.

I pretty much agree with Chuck on this one, but I'm not going to
be vocal if the majority here feels strongly otherwise. The
whole "coding standards" argument has always been something of a
battle between correctness and convenience, and it's not going to
be solved once and for all on pear-dev@lists.php.net.
