The comment there is somewhat misleading... :[
In fact I extend PEAR to be able to do
$tpl = new HTML_Template_IT();
$tpl->setErrorHandling(PEAR_ERROR_Something);
I usually use PEAR_ERROR_DIE, but that is personal preference.
