In the link you provided :
"- PFCs have to run on each released PHP-version since 4.2. If PHP 5 has
matured, they have to run on PHP 5 as well"
Actually it would be nice if pear could provide a little bc library for things like get_file_contents() which is in 4.3 but not 4.2 where posible..
something like :
if php_vers() < 4.3
require_once 'PEAR/PHP4.2.compact.php'
Obviously there will probably be beta versions of PFC classes that are PHP5 ready, just not listed as stable in the packager.. - and not all classes __have__ to be in PFC, standard PEAR libraries can choose to support PHP5 when they like.
But dont forget - it's probably going to be 6 months to 2 years before a significant number of hosters upgrade to PHP5, think about the cobolt cubes with their custom PHP extension etc....
(although with the current feature creap I'm wonder if it's ever going out the door :)
