My guess is that it can be done in 2 ways. In the first there is a global ZEND2
or PHP5 branch of the whole pear repository, and then packages move to that
branch as they get converted, this would keep consistency accross the
repository. The second option is to let each package have ZEND1/PHP4 and
ZEND2/PHP5 branches, this is easier to do for any developer familiar w/ CVS,
but may cause some inconsistencies, in particular among pacakges that depend on
each other, nothing unsolvable IMHO.
Another, more radical option, is to have 2 pear CVS trees, reserving the one we
already have for the code that will work with PHP4 or PHP5 (i.e. the one that
does not use namespaces, private/protected/public, etc.), and a new one for the
packages that will only work with PHP5. Not sure if that would cause more
confusion than the branching approaches, after all in the package.xml we can
require PHP5 for any new release of a particular package.
BTW, I wrote a blurb on object comparison in PHP4 for the PHP manual, and now I
am adding another for PHP5 (will include a note saying that the information is
still 'Experimental').
