Hi
The circumstances that led to the creation of ODBTP was that I needed a
solutionp that provided the best access to MS SQL Server from UNIX/Linux
with PHP. Once I started evaluating the extensions that came with PHP I
realized that they were not capable of doing what I wanted. Because I
really liked PHP and did not want to continue to use JSP, I decided to see
if there were other available extensions that did not come with PHP. I
found odbcsock, dbtcp and sqlrelay. The odbcsock and dbtcp extension were
useless to me. sqlrelay appeared to be what I was looking for, but it too
was not adequate. It also did not work on Win32, and its PHP functions
were strange in comparison to the databases extensions included with PHP.
The thing that I realized was that an extension is only as good as the C
library upon which it was built. Both mssql an sqlrelay use the FreeTDS
library, and it historically has had many problems providing full and
reliable access to later versions of MS SQL Server. I also discovered that
MS does not provide free solutions (in fact I don't think non-free either)
for connecting to MS SQL from Unix or Linux. (Gee I wonder why?)
Because I really like PHP, and have a lot of experience with programming
with the ODBC API on Win32, Win32 services, and TCP/IP, I decided to make
ODBTP. I also created a C library that would make it easy to build a PHP
extension that did exactly what I wanted.
ODBTP was primarily designed to provide the best access to MS SQL
using the MS SQL Server ODBC driver. The fact that it can be used to
connect to other Win32 ODBC accessible databases was secondary for me.
The problem I had with the sqlralay and odbc extensions was that they were
"Jack of all Trades" solutions. On the other hand, the goal for ODBTP is
to be the "Master" solution for accessing MS SQL databases from PHP
regardless of the underlying platform.
