that person would be me. i think its too early for anything to be written in
stone. while the extension im working on implements most or all of the
functionality in the Date package, it is definitely not lightweight (it is
designed as a part of an I18N framework), so there may well be instances
where a simpler and lighter solution is warranted.
also, the package most likely will be in the I18N namespace, so there
should be no problems with clashes.
