There are things in PEAR that I don't like, but on the whole I think PEAR provides a very solid solution to a number of problems -- and yes a good framework starting point. I think the real problem here is that performance plays far too great a role in the design and implementation of PHP applications. To do the job right usually means building an application that performs poorly. This is true in environements besides PHP, but the requirement that an app's lifecycle be run to completeion while the user waits for a page to load is pretty demanding. I hope that better & easier solutions in the way of bytecode compilers and application sessions will make for some higher-quality PHP products. Hans [not the above-quoted Hans]
