select a varchar(2048) field, but it show only first 255 characters

hello
i do my db connections with pear. if i want do a select statement for
example:
name is varchar(2048)
select name from table;
after when i want read this field on browser, then only the first 255
characters will be shown..
is this a php or a pear problem?
who can solve this problem?
