Can you tell me what "available in the web" means?
I just tried to install the recent php-src HEAD and *all* the PEAR
things are broken. If there's any kind of better installer I'd like
to try it. Thanks.

Hi, There is a new pear installer version avaible in the web, which is supposed to fix a lot of anoying bugs like the upgrade-all or white spaces in path names. Please give it a test, we have 3 days until php 4.3.3RC3.
