This entire discussion started out by saying (so I read): If package maintainers are knowingly going to be absent for extended periods of time (I'd consider than > 1month), then it should be their duty to appoint a temporary maintainer who has enough knowledge about the package to fix bugs/apply patches. pearweb already has the facility to add/remove maintainers, lets use it. I do not think this should be a hard and fast rule, merely an "If it is possible". Obviously, not every package will have a) someone who knows it well enough to maintain it and b) that person being willing to maintain said package. I don't see any problems with this at all, I fail also to see how anyone could object, its the same as getting someone to pick up your mail whilst you're away, or feed the cat, common sense. - Davey
