If you're doing a PEAR presentation somewhere, you can always pick an
indentation argument with the audience if you forget what you were
going to say. That's why it's there. ;-)
Seriously: my reason for supporting the "spaces only" format is that
it's the only thing that looks the same in any program. I don't know
when this "four-space tab" movement got started, probably an invasion
from the DOS/Windows world or something, but I've always used 8-space
tabs before. "less" has 8-space tabs by default, as does my printer
driver. Vim as most people prefer to configure it and it seems as
good as all Windows editors have 4-space tabs by default, so how do we
ensure that formatting is persistent? By not using tabs.
