Please take a look at Horde's MIME framework that has been completely rewritten by Michael Slusarz since Horde 2.x/IMP 3.x and is currently the most complete MIME solution in PHP available. I already tried to convince him to make this available as a PEAR package, but perhaps some more people stepping on his toes motivate him more ;-) It already does everything that you did with your Mail_Message/Mail_Message_Reader/Mail_Message_Writer and much more including what you currently experienced as being tricky.
