I usually do it this way:
.) download latst package source I intend to isntall (mostly via
cvs)
.) Create a pear isntall package
cd cvs-downloaded-package/
pear packge
This created e.g.:
Package /public/hdb1/root/isrc/cvs/pear/Config/Config-0.2.1.tgz done
.) install it
pear -v 2 -p /usr/share/pear/ install Config-0.2.1.tgz
[..]
install ok
(normally you don't need verbosity and to specify a destination
dir)
