Hi,
just to make things a bit clearer, because I have the feeling that this
did not get communicated clearly enough.
PECL used to be a subproject of PEAR. However the PEAR Group felt that
this hindered PECL more than it helped. We therefore decided to give
leadership of PECL to a separate entity, so that PECL could gain more
momentum. PECL leadership could come up with its own regulations etc.
As you may have noticed from Wez's announcement
(http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=pear-dev&m=106392922123993&w=2) the
other day, he has taken over this position.
So what does that mean for PEAR?
Actually we think it doesn't change things a lot for PEAR at all.
Development of packages will go on as usual. PECL packages never really
fit into our peer review process anyways so that PECL package where
never much of a topic on the PEAR lists.
We will however continue to provide infrastructure in the form of
pearweb and the pear installer. These will be used by PECL just as
before. However PECL will get its own site with its own look and feel
over at pecl.php.net.
As a result only issues with pearweb internals (not typos which should
go to peclwebmaster) on pecl.php.net should be discussed on PEAR lists.
Only issues with the installer not issues with PECL packages itself
should be discussed on PEAR mailinglists. When in doubt first contact
the PECL lists.
We will probably soon create a new mailinglist to discuss the PEAR
infrastructure. Until then pear-dev is the place to go.
So what does that mean for PECL?
As mentioned above PECL will get its own regulations. All PECL related
discussions will take place on their own mailinglists. We already
separated the CVS and the CVS commit list a while back. So I guess this
change really did not come out of nowhere.
We think this will mean that both projects can now better focus on their
specific issues. The community for each while having considerable
overlap was also too large which sort of overwhelmed the PECL people.
This step will therefore help build up a community feel among the PECL
people and will also help us, the PEAR community, to focus on our
strengths.
The future looks bright yadayada ;-)
Regards,
the PEAR Group
