Persistant connections were causing all sorts of trouble with mysql.
They don't really make much sense for mysql. They are missing from the
mysqli ext for that reason. However the mysql4 driver still seems to be
using the old ext. Anyways mysql4 is currently more a playground than a
finished driver.
