Well, I see the definite advantage to the flat directory structure. It makes
it much easier to modify the package.xml to fit a different directory
structure. It is also easier to browse. Maybe people working in a gui don't
realize that when you work in a shell, every directory level requires more
typing and is one more thing that can go wrong.
I develop in my cvs directory. Here's how I do it.
First, I'm mostly using vim in a unix shell. I create a basic test file that
can run in the cvs directory and output the results directly to the screen.
For most packages that don't require testing the gui interface, that should
suffice. And then, of course, it's nice to use unit tests to make sure you
don't break anything.
If you indeed want to test it on a "live" application (installed hopefully
on a dev server), simply
$ pear upgrade package.xml (which has to be kept current, of course.
Then reload the page in your browser, and see if you get what you want. Of
course, you can also set up unit tests with html output, modify them to use
the cvs source directory and place them where your browser can get to them.
Anyway, that's how I work.
Btw, Tobias, all my emails to you get bounced. I wrote an email before the
Frankfurt conference about the shirts, and it bounced, too. No idea why!
Maybe you could look into it.
Thanks,
Klaus
