Will DB.php ever use UNIX sockets?

Will DB.php ever use UNIX sockets instead of TCP sockets? A lot of database
servers would reside on the webserver, and using the IP stack seems
inefficient (not to mention that Postgresql explicitly needs to be told to
listen on a TCP socket).
I realise that UNIX sockets are not compatible with Win32 architectures, but
hey, you can't win 'em all.
