Not that the new extension is bad but I > cannot imagine smooth migration with such huge BC :). > The new extension is mysqli. Both can work together (not possible to run > 2 different mysql clients btw). Nothing is obsolete. There are two MySQL function groups in PHP 5. * The old mysql_*() functions for MySQL 4.0 and below (http://php.net/mysql) which is, if I recall correctly, generally on by default in PHP 4 but for PHP 5 is an extension that needs to be uncommented in php.ini for Windows or compiled in on other platforms. This is handled in PEAR by mysql.php. * The new mysqli_*() functions for MySQL 4.1 and greater (http://php.net/mysqli) which is only in PHP 5 and has to be compiled in. I haven't messed around with this yet. I THOUGHT this was handled by mysql4.php, but now taking a look at the file I see that it uses the old mysql_*() functions. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding the intention of mysql4.php or the new function names weren't available when nicos wrote the class nearly a year ago. I'll contact Chaillan Nicolas <nicos@php.net> to see what's going on here. --Dan -- T H E A N A L Y S I S A N D S O L U T I O N S C O M P A N Y data intensive web and database programming http://www.AnalysisAndSolutions.com/ 4015 7th Ave #4, Brooklyn NY 11232 v: 718-854-0335 f: 718-854-0409
