The next version is not planned yet, however we are hoping that with php 5.1 there will be a C ext that will take over most of the work of DB. This means that we can focus on the abstraction and not so much on API unification.
That's what I thought about too :) So the PEAR::DB API will become an C-extension, which should hopefully replace DBX? This would be very nice. But why not MDB2? That would be the best solution I think. And it would be a nice feature to PHP, many people alleways say that PHP has no real abstraction layer, I think an C-Extension with the functionality of MDB2 would be a really great feature!
There will be a package build on that new extension which will provide the MDB2 feature set. However it doesnt really make sense to put alot of abstraction into C, as this stuff is just a but too tricky and too much of a moving target. Anyways my vision of the second major version of the DB package is essentially the functionality of MDB2 build on top of the above mentioned extension. regards, Lukas Smith smith@backendmedia.com _______________________________ BackendMedia www.backendmedia.com berlin@backendmedia.com Linn Zwoch Smith GbR Pariser Str. 44 D-10707 Berlin Tel +49 30 83 22 50 00 Fax +49 30 83 22 50 07
