That's what PEAR::loadExtension() is for.

Description:
------------
PECL extension names are inconsistant between operating systems, on
Windows the extensions are named php_extension and on linux they are
named just extension. This makes it very hard and messy to write cross
platform applications, if the extensions were named the same, then you
could do
dl('php_extension.'.PHP_SHLIB_SUFFIX);
Now you have to do a complicated check to see what naming convention
your platform follows, then get the correct extension.
