May I ask why you try to install alpha3 although the stable is out?
Anyway, it is easily possible. Just give the full version right after
the package-name, separated by a hyphen: PHPUnit-1.0.0alpha3.
pear install PHPUnit-1.0.0alpha3
If you already installed 1.0.0 do uninstall it before or use upgrade
with --force.
