In general numerical analysis methods are closer to what you would term applied
math, so it makes sense to have a package implementing one (or a series) of
them in the Math category.
I looked very briefly at the code and it looks like it could be PEAR-ized. We
all should be aware that the PHPMath group (phpmath.com) is also interested in
this code, so we should not duplicate efforts.
The PHPMath group aims to generate self-contained functions that can be easily
copied/integrated in anyone's code. It might be a good approach to also come up
with automated (or even semi-automated) way of creating these distributable
functions, as well as packages that can be installed using the PEAR package
manager.
I am guessing (have not had time to think on all the ramifications of this),
that in PHPMath we could use a naming convention for the functions (names and
files), and then use the classification Paul is already creating there [1] to
come up with package names in the PHPMath "namespace", which could then be
distributed via PEAR and/or the PHPMath site.
If that were the case, once the functions in Firman's code are packaged it
could be named PHPMath_Numeric_RootFinding or PHPMath_RootFinding. I would
prefer the first name as there is other code in PHPMath that implements
numerical analysis algorithms.
Comments? Ideas?
