Please, this is not a personnal attack on Juergen.
My point of view comes from many years of work in the domain of translation,
including for example http://www.pgadmin.org/pgadmin3/translation.php
which offers more than 33 languages.
To be honest, I believe that plural Gettext is absurd and should be removed
from GNU/Linux. Simply because you cannot "code" plural using a computer
language. Human languages are far too complicated for that.
Now, if you tell me that you are going to code 'plural', 'accusative' and the
'zero' figure, like in the Maketext proposal, my answer is 'dream'.
Even if Hans Juergen is valuable, it can only lead to PEAR users (especially
English native speakers) believe that it is POSSIBLE to code sentences. Which
is not. Hence, people will loose their work and may need to recode their
strings from scratch.
If your application/site require several languages, the best is to write a
different sentence for each case. Like explained in the article.
My € 0.02 :)

Jean-Michel
