I would not use PEAR with any earlier version than 4.0.2. The "=&new"
construct is probably the most important difference, but in general
the PEAR stuff is currently not "older-version-of-PHP" compatible,
since it's distributed with a known PHP version.
You can try taking the PEAR files out of the coming 4.0.5 release and
use that, but you'll need to do some manual hacks to make it work.
