With all due respect to Alan, Lukas, and all the rest, I do not intend to pursue a merged Flexy/Savant at this time. Even with yesterday's work on Flexy, it's not clear to me that the underlying ideas mesh well. This is no disparagement of Alan's work to incorporate Savant ideas into Flexy, which has been fast and effective. In response to his effort, I have expended some effort of my own to do a quick refactoring of Savant: specifically, to address the points that Alan brought up (e.g. streamlining), those of Joshua Eichorn (a "stub" compile method for user extension) and some of my own (error handling). The result, for Savant, is faster, more extensible, leaner implementation with support for plugins and filters, and no significant BC breaks. (At some point in the future I might remove built-in filters in favor of stream-based filters, but that's not for certain at all.) This is not to say that I would oppose a general PEAR template engine free of the legacies of the PEAR template wars to deprecate all earlier templates, including Savant. A new codebase with all the lessons learned from all the current template engines would be wonderful to have; it would not be Xipe, Flexy, or Savant, but combine the best of these into a lean base class that has the minimum functions and at the same time extensible for custom solutions. I love the idea and would contribute where I could, but it may be a utopian idea. :-/ Are there other comments on the Savant proposal, either on the original code or on the new (ugly) refactoring? Yes, I know the refactored PEAR_ErrorStack implementation is rudimentary at best ... I'm slower than Alan when it comes to revamps, I need more time to think. He's great. -- Paul M.
