PHP must be doing some strange things internally....
According to some tests I just ran (yes, of course they're completely
made up), it doesn't really make a difference whether you use " or '
when there is no substitution in the string. I used both an direct and
an eval() approach to make sure that re-parsing was simulated. (of
course, there could have been some kind of cache....) and both single
and double quotes were about the same. When strings were substituted,
there was a significant speedup for single quotes.
So I guess my conclusion here would be: always use single quotes,
they're faster overall.
I don't understand why they're not always faster, though....
This was tested in PHP 4.3.6 and PHP 5.0.0, BTW.
