I always use the great bug-free & krash-proof Debian Stable for production servers, and really prefer to stay with the official default packages (understand: php4).
The paradox here is that the official stable package is PHP4.1.2. Only the testing (v4.3.4) and unstable (v4.3.8) releases has actual recent bugfixed (and thus hopefully more stable ;-) versions of PHP...
IIRC, it's not only bugfixes but many features that were added starting from the 4.2 series. There's some BC issues about that. Adding features is usually not a step toward stability. But, the 4.3 series are stable enough for me. The problem is that Debian Woody got frozen until the stable release of Sarge...
Of course, since Debian has a _very_ strict testing cycle before accepting anything in its stable distribution, I don't think we're gonna see php5 arriving before a long time... Maybe, I'll give it a try, compiling from source, or installing some unofficial package, but honestly, only _one_ segfault and I'll downgrade.
Just drop "deb http://packages.dotdeb.org ./" in the apt's sources.list ;-).
Yeah, I saw the dotdeb unofficial php5 packages :-)
It actually works fine, but I'll recommend the use of the CGI version, since PHP4 and PHP5 can the coexist... Just add the following lines in httpd.conf
Action php4-cgi /cgi-bin/php4
Action php5-cgi /cgi-bin/php5
# Allows easy switching between php versions by changing a symbolic link to either php4 or php5.
Action php-cgi /cgi-bin/php
You can then switch to the CGI-versions on the .htaccess level by adding: AddHandler php5-cgi .php
That's interesting... But it's not a solution. I better be choosing wether I go with php4 or php5 for a given project. Once things are coded, it's not only a matter of switching with AddHandler : I'd need to php4'ize everything. -- og
