Doing some simple benchmarks shows that preg_replace provides
nearly identical speed, while IIRC it operates even faster on
large texts. And it seems that array('/(?<!\r)\n/','/\r(?!\n)/')
is faster than '/(?<!\r)\n|\r(?!\n)/'.
