Are you using a hand coded tokenizer - or a lex? - you may want to have a look at
http://php-sharp.sourceforge.net/index.php/6.html
It might make the whole tokenizer stuff alot more manageable.

I am re-writing the tokenizer to support most mathematical functions and symbols, to plan for future improvement. The features would be : * Simplify an algebraic chain (already implemented, support for fractions, parentheses, powers, etc. is there) * Resolve first-degree one variable equations (under development) * Calculate simple algebraic division and multiplications (additions & substractions go in *1) (i.e, 6ab * 10ab = 60a^2b^2) (already implemented too) * Results returned as objects which have an API for returning the result either as HTML or as plain text (already implemented)Sounds good. Do you have support for functions as well, at least for the tokenizer...? It would be good to have a MathML renderer as well. Note: When you post examples make sure you write them properly. In my book, 2/3x is not the same as 2x/3... I read the first one as 2/(3x)... -Philippe
