PEAR 1.4.0a5 fixes the issue entirely without breaking BC. If you can't even upgrade, just delete the debug_backtrace() from PEAR.php in the PEAR_Error constructor.
Once you have upgraded, the debug_backtrace() will be back where it should be, but the PEAR installer will function just fine in PHP 5.0.3 and others that have the segfault issue. PHP 5.0.4 reportedly fixes this issue.
