Hi all,
as a sort of proof-of-concept, I've made a standalone PEAR that can be run out of the box without any installation necessary. It's a single file created with PHP_Archive (CVS), and is located at
http://pear.chiaraquartet.net/PEAR.phar
This is by no means anything official, as PHP_Archive hasn't even been released or fully regression tested. In addition, the file is 660k, which is a LOT bigger than PEAR.tgz, even though gzip compression was used. This is because Davey's original design used the tar format to make the file readable using normal tar tools, and tar headers are kinda big and redundant. There are a couple of neat ways to fix this up, but I won't talk about them until they are no longer vaporware :).
The speed of PEAR.phar is remarkable - I can't immediately tell the difference between normal PEAR and PEAR.phar on two systems tested. It does, however, use loads of memory, but sets memory_limit to -1 so nobody should see that issue :).
the phar does not run without php, so use
$ php PEAR.phar
to run it. Any command I tested works
$ php PEAR.phar install SomePackage
$ php PEAR.phar list
$ php PEAR.phar remote-list
etc.
Those of you with ZDE must turn off the debugger in php.ini or you will get immediate segfaults. I don't think ZDE knows how to handle streams very well yet :(.
