Well his solution does sound like a solution that requires no changes in
PHP (like waiting for php5).
It would of course require a fair amount of changes to existing files
and would give a lot of users quite a surprise if they update and
suddenly find their PEAR files have moved.
Anyways PHP5 is "just" around the corner so right now it might not be
feasible to make such a change now. But remember that even if php5 is
released php4 (and even some php3) installations will remain.
