If you say that Stig is not "harcore" user of PHP, you are simply
wrong :-).

This will break _all_ sites that currently rely on PEAR. Honestly,
but: Your plan does not sound very well thought.
I don't see a real problem here BTW:
There will be no more new directories in php4/pear in the future.
All the new stuff will go to /pear and you will have to install
it manually. So from now on you can rely on the fact that there
will be no new directories in your PEAR directory without your
will.
-> There will be no directory clashes unless you don't take care
enough.
