Nice, I will take a look at the sources later this week.
Have you tried those I added in PHP ext/gd? You have nearly all of
them there. image_filter is the function to use them, one being
particulary flexible is image_convolution(), it allows you to apply a
custom 3x3 convolution matrix.

I prefer a surface approach as a pixel approach,much more efficient
for effects in general.
