Hi All, There have been a number of recent threads on upgrading PEAR to better support PHP 5/6.
PHP 6 does not exist yet. And until there is a alpha release and/or we approach a feature freeze, it makes no sense to even think what will be broken there. Unicode itself will require to change all packages anyway.
If packages were all isolated then upgrading would be straight forward but there are of course many inter-dependencies. Some folks have mentioned that there are about 20 packages that are heavily depended on. Seems to me that it might be nice to know exactly what might be involved in upgrading a package from a dependency point of view. If we had a master list of all packages and their dependencies then perhaps we could pull this into a spreadsheet or database and do some some slicing and dicing. Determine which packages really are depended heavily on. Maybe come up with an overall strategy of which packages should be upgraded first. That sort of thing.
And once we know which should be updated first, how will you do it? As always, the active maintainers will do it when they need it. Doing a list or not will not help to find more people to test and port packages to php5+, imo. That said, I think it is time to stop (or pause) discussing this topic and go back to code. This is the best way to catch the possible troubles as soon as possible. Cheers, -- Pierre
