While I was fighting the patch upload process earlier today, I found myself
picking on old pearweb a little bit much. "It needs more padding" and "argh,
those dashed borders"; and all sorts of other unfair little CSS criticisms
crept into my mind.
Rather than waste time with putting in feature requests for css enhancements
one at a time; and too lazy to create patches, I remembered stylish (
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2108); which lets you
customise CSS on pages.
Subsequently, I did a bit of tweak or two to suite my personal preferences (
http://userstyles.org/style/show/2267) - but I'm sure there's a lot more
that could be done.
It got me thinking - this is a very good way to do minor design enhancements
without having to muck about in code; or implement something 'wrong'.
So I put it to the mailing list:
1. Find the page(s) you find difficult to use or just plain offend your
sense of aesthetics
2. Install stylish (and firebug doesn't hurt; so you can inspect page
items)
3. Add a user style or two to fix the problem(s)
4. Put it on userstyles.org (a community site, think greasemonkey +
userscripts.org but for CSS)
5. Share back with the mailing list
After a while with several user styles out there, we could actually
implement the best/most desirable css improvements - or at least ticket
them. If it proves useful enough, inserting a lot more css classes / ids
across the pearweb site could lay an even denser foundation for others to
build on too...
