You have touched a very sensitive area for which there seems to be not
much agreement in the Open Source world.
Some Open Source developers have alergy to concepts like advertising,
marketing, promotion, etc.. because they sound as if what is being
promoted is not free.
I don't think that matters. As long nobody is misleading anybody, I
believe that all methods are valid to promote Open Source products and
technologies. If you don't promote your project, people that could
benefit from it will never know about it, while they may just go and use
something else that is probably not Open Source and may not even satisfy
the users as your Open Source project.
So, lets invest on making sensible and effective efforts to promote PHP,
PEAR and whatever you believe in.
In that sense, if there is interest, the right hand banner area of the
PHP Classes is reserved for doing banner exchanges with partner. So I am
open to doing banner exchange with PEAR or any other PHP content related
site.
Over the years, sites like www.WeberDev.com and PHP projects like
Phorum.org have been exchanging banners with the PHP Classes site. I
don't have numbers but I am sure that many users were brought to each
others sites.
Today, PHP Classes site is raising its audience with near about 300 new
subscribers a day. That leads to about 500.000 page views a month but it
is growing exponentially.
When I start with mirrors, for which the tests should happen this month,
I expect the audience to explode. After that I some more user grabbing
ideas that I will not talk about yet because I want to make the proof of
concept first, but I expect the audience to grow further.
In sum, if there is interest, just let me know so I can setup the
exchange. There is no hit by hit accounting. So, some days one site may
lead more users to the other but I don't mind even if it is the PHP
Classes site to lead more users out of it. The format of the banner to
be exchange is IAB button 2 which is 120x60. You can send me an URL so
you can even rotate PEAR banners to grab more attention. Once you send
me the URL I will send you a graphic of the same size or a URL pointing
to it if you prefer, so we can start exchanging for mutual benefit of
both sites.
