1) Do you see a chance to avoid HTTP_Request and make this a true PHP 5 package? PEAR.php has a huge footprint and you should be able to realize what you are doing with HTTP_Request with e.g. the curl extension.
I was just unsure how PHP5-only PEAR package should call outside, as there are more than one ways having different dependency to other PEAR packages or extensions. I think you're fine to keep the dependency on HTTP_Request for now, just make a note that you'll upgrade to HTTP_Request2 when its had a release.

David and I have a HTTP_Request2 in the works that is driver based and can use curl, pecl_http, the php stream, or raw sockets. I'll see if I can get something at least alpha this week.
I myself am more confortable with cUrl. If the HTTP_Request2 is coming to solve those dependency issues (and make us free from thnking what libraries available on each environment), it will be good to use that, too. Yeah the problem with just relying on curl is that everyone doesn't have it.

2) What do you think of returning some sort of result object instead of the raw SimpleXML-instance in get()?

For the result object at least wrap the SimpleXML instance so you have the ability to add methods in the future.
Hmm. How about convert SimpleXMLElement object to associative arrays and return it? Returning a custom object will make it much easier to deal with any changes in the future while still keeping things backwards compatible
