It seems that the line length standard is a hold over from the days
when people had to work on low res terminal screens. I'm not aware of
any definitive stats but i would guess most developers would be
working on 1280*1024 + screens now.
Personally working on a 1900*1200 screen the 80 character limit
detracts from readability instead of improving it.
What would you think about increasing the limit to better suite modern screens?
