David (and others involved),
Thanks for doing the Google Summer of Code application work for PEAR.
Also, David, thank you for the excellent summary on the reasoning and
status of GSoC for PEAR. It is unfortunate that Google did not accept
PEAR as an organization. Even though we were not accepted this year I
think it is worth applying as an independent organization again next
year for the reasons you outlined in your email.
Following PEAR's rejection, I've had a couple of potential students
email me about the Amazon Web Services proposal I posted on the PEAR
wiki [1]. It seems the PHP GSoC wiki page [2] tells students that if
there are spare PHP project slots, some slots may be used for PEAR/PECL
projects. I'd like to get some confirmation from PEAR/PHP as to whether
or not that statement is accurate. So far, I've been telling students
that PEAR was not accepted, and have been linking to David's mailing
list post.
That said, even after telling students the proposal is no longer
suitable as a GSoC project, there are still several developers
interested in helping out. Some of these developers and myself will most
likely be doing the work over the summer without Google funding.
Cheers,
Mike
