I agree, and as someone who asked Kristina to create a PEAR package instead of simply including the PHP code within the newly created (and documented) PECL extension it seems like something can be worked out here. The code has existed for awhile and users out there exist so breaking BC is a worthy concern.
We went over a few possibilities on how it could be included and still maintain: - Maintain two versions. Converting the old one to be 99.99% BC means releasing a PEAR package is as simple as changing a few class names and file paths. Could probably be done with M4 and a Makefile. - Maintain the old version with security updates only and bugs, while putting all future effort into the PEAR package. - Turn the old version into a decorator for the PEAR version. You could even ship the required PEAR code with the old version. Those are all totally reasonable options and all would allow there to still be a PEAR package that conformed to PEAR's long established coding standards. --Joe
