There has been some appreciation of that idea, but I will not create a
pear2 package. The current code exists and has potential to be
improved. If we'd started a new package now, the current one would stay
unusable - leading to another inactive, unusable package. So I chose
improving the existing one over starting a new and abandoning the
unfinished old one.
