Hi,
As we near the next election for PEAR Group and President, I'd like to
ask all of the candidates to provide us with a brief history of their
contributions to PEAR, and why we should vote for you. This year, the
content of what has happened is more important than in previous years
because Pyrus and PEAR2 will be happening as a reality in the next
couple of weeks.
In addition, I feel it is only appropriate that the existing PEAR Group
members and PEAR president who are running for re-election provide a
more thorough accounting of what they have been doing in the past year.
The existing PEAR Group has been unable to formulate a complete coding
standard for PEAR2 (the first draft was approved and put in the manual
on Dec. 24, 2007, and expired on March 1, 2008, and was never renewed).
In fact, a small subset of developers from the PEAR Group have taken the
step of discussing standards with outside projects and representing PEAR
as a project without first announcing what the new coding standards
would look like to pear-dev, or putting anything in the manual. If my
wording sounds harsh, it is intended to be so only as a call to action
and accountability for our elected leaders.
We, the developer who will actually have to use these standards have at
the very least a passing interest in what they will be before they are
set in stone. The mailing list at http://news.php.net/php.standards
catalogs some of the back-and-forth regarding the standards, and
actually contains a document with the standards as initially proposed by
Travis at the informal php|tek meeting, and originally proposed as a
PEAR Group RFC on the public wiki at
http://wiki.php.net/pear/rfc/pear2_naming_standards
(back when the
namespace separator was ::).
A special thanks to our elected leaders for your service is due, it can
be hard work running PEAR, and as the former president I appreciate the
effort and sacrifices it takes to do a good job. All I ask is that each
current candidate give us a description of where you stand on issues
that are important to PEAR developers such as the new proposed coding
standard, how PEAR2 should move forward, and related issues.
Thanks,
Greg
