What exactly are you trying to achieve here? The error messages are run time, not compile time, so they will only affect those running with deprecated magic quotes enabled *and* not having E_DEPRECATED messages switched off. I think a better approach is to allow such people see the error messages (and possibly fix their setup at last) rather than silently break the packages for them (PEAR_Error is quite easily missed).
I propose: 1. Tag/Branch the code at this point, fix the issue on trunk for both packages 2. Put in the world's loudest "we just did a BC break" changelog messages in the relevant releases 3. Publish that on the package homepage too. Markus, Chuck - thoughts?
